## FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

### General Questions

**Q: How do I know if I'm ready to claim a case?**
A: Start with a beginner case if you've completed the new member orientation
and have basic research skills. You don't need to be an expert - you'll learn
as you go. If unsure, ask a mentor or moderator for guidance.

**Q: Can I work on multiple cases at once?**
A: We recommend focusing on one case at a time, especially for new members.
Once you've completed a case successfully, you can take on additional cases
if you have the time.

**Q: What if I claim a case and realize it's too difficult?**
A: That's okay! Contact moderators and explain the situation. You can either:
- Request additional team members with specific skills
- Hand the case to another investigator
- Put the case on hold temporarily
- Close the case with a summary of what you learned

**Q: How long do I have to complete a case?**
A: There's no strict deadline, but we ask for progress updates every 2 weeks.
If a case goes inactive for 60 days with no updates, moderators may reassign
it. Communicate if you need more time or want to extend your investigation.

**Q: Can I claim a case from another country?**
A: Yes, but consider language barriers, access to records, and time zone
differences. International cases may require team members in that country
or region.

**Q: What if my investigation uncovers something illegal or dangerous?**
A: Stop immediately and contact moderators. Do not investigate further. Do
not post publicly about it. Moderators will help you report it to appropriate
authorities through proper channels.

### Team Questions

**Q: What if a team member isn't pulling their weight?**
A: Follow the process in Part 2 - private message first, set deadline for
response, redistribute tasks if needed, notify moderators if the situation
doesn't improve.

**Q: What if team members disagree on theories?**
A: Disagreement is healthy! Document both theories, test each against evidence,
assign probability ratings. Focus on evidence, not opinions. The best theory
should emerge through rigorous testing.

**Q: Can I join a team mid-investigation?**
A: Yes, if the team lead approves. Contact them via private message or reply
to their case thread expressing interest. They may need additional skills as
the investigation develops.

**Q: What if I want to leave a team?**
A: Communicate with your team lead as soon as possible. Finish any tasks
you've committed to if you can. Hand off your work properly so others can
continue. It's okay to step away - just do it respectfully.

---

### Technical Questions

**Q: What tools or software do I need?**
A: Basic investigation requires only internet access and a word processor.
Helpful tools include:
- Spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets)
- Note-taking app (Evernote, OneNote)
- Cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox)
- Timeline software (optional - see Technology Tools section)

**Q: Do I need to pay for database access?**
A: No. Many excellent free resources exist. Some members choose to subscribe
to genealogy sites (Ancestry.com) or newspaper archives, but it's not required.
Never pay for questionable "people search" services.

**Q: How do I organize all the information I find?**
A: Use the folder structure and templates provided in Resources & Tools section.
Start organized from day one - it's much harder to organize later.

---

### Ethics Questions

**Q: Can I contact the family of a victim?**
A: Only with moderator approval and proper preparation. Most cases don't
require family contact. If needed, experienced members should make contact
using approved communication protocols.

**Q: What if I find someone's private social media or personal information?**
A: If it's truly private (not publicly accessible), you shouldn't have accessed
it and shouldn't use it. If it's public but sensitive, consult moderators
before including it in your investigation.

**Q: Can I write about my investigation on my personal blog or social media?**
A: Discuss with your team and moderators first. You can share general information
about your investigation, but protect privacy, don't sensationalize, and don't
share information that should remain confidential.

**Q: What if I discover information that makes someone look guilty?**
A: Present it as evidence, not as accusation. Include in your analysis but
maintain objectivity. Never publicly accuse anyone of a crime. If evidence
is significant, report to law enforcement through moderators.
